Third Grade Trials Third Grade Trial

On Monday, June 5th, the third grade students, teachers, and parents filed into the Palm Beach County Courthouse for the culmination of a trimester long project-based learning experience. PBDA parent, The Honorable Judge Lisa Small, presided over both third grade class trials. Months before their trial, the students researched their cases and used what they learned throughout the school year about organizing their thinking with Thinking Maps and providing reasons and evidence to support their arguments to write a script for their case. The focus of each trial was whether or not a building should be constructed on a wildlife refuge. Students played the roles of defendant and plaintiff lawyers, expert witnesses, and a bailiff. After each case was heard, Judge Small and a jury comprised of law students made their ruling. This authentic learning opportunity was a memorable experience for all who attended.
