First Annual Family BBQ - September 26

Last Saturday evening, over 400 of our Palm Beach Day Academy family members enjoyed a delicious barbeque dinner and plenty of conversations with new and familiar faces. The children enjoyed multi-family meals with their parents before dashing off to be with their classmates. The youngest children, and even a few older ones, watched a movie in the Smith Family Theater in the Matthews Center for Performing Arts. Many were visiting the theater for the first time.
The purpose of the evening was simply to bring Lower and Upper Campus families together as one community in an expression of the school’s gratitude for their support of the school. Year after year, PBDA families generously do far more than their share to make our school thrive. Each one is important to our larger family and all are appreciated for their time, commitment, and enthusiasm for PBDA.
The combined voices of the Lower and Upper Campus Choruses capped the evening with an upbeat song entitled, “Everything is Awesome,” and indeed, it was!

Award PBDA's Physical Education Program Earns Recognition
Rusty Wilkerson & Kelly Zingaro
First Lady, Michelle Obama's Let's Move! Active Schools campaign, announced its 2015 National Award honorees. PBDA was recognized for its outstanding efforts to create an Active School environment that increases physical activity and physical education opportunities for students.
To earn a Let's Move! Active Schools National Award, a school must have met significant benchmarks in five areas — physical education, physical activity before and/or after-school, physical activity during school, staff involvement, and family & community engagement.
The Let's Move! Active Schools National Award is the TOP physical education distinction for K-12 schools. The award celebrates a school's commitment to integrating at least 60 minutes of physical activity during and after school.
Studies have proven that physical activity not only helps kids stay healthy and strong, but it can also lead to improved attendance, higher test scores, better behavior in class, and enhanced leadership skills.
We are proud to be 1 of only 4 schools in PB county that received this award.

7th Graders Qualify to Apply to Duke TIP
pic1 On the basis of their 5th or 6th Grade standardized test scores, twenty-six 7th Graders qualified to take the next step toward acceptance to the Duke University summer program, Duke TIP (Talent Identification Program). Eligibility is earned by scoring at or above the 95th percentile on age/grade appropriate achievement or aptitude tests within the past two years. Palm Beach Day Academy uses the CTP scores to determine Seventh Grade eligibility. Achieving a qualifying score on the CTP is the first step for students who would like to participate in the TIP offerings on the Duke TIP campuses next summer. To apply, qualifiers must take either the ACT or the SAT in the 7th Grade.

The International Day of Peace Flag Assembly took place on the Lower Campus on Friday, September 25th. This annual tradition highlights the importance of becoming a global citizen and our quest for peace both locally and internationally. The Lower School Chorus performed John Lennon’s song Imagine followed by the announcement of the countries being studied this year. This year’s countries of study include the United States (Pre-Primary), Canada (Primary), Argentina and Cuba (Kindergarten), Italy and Greece (First Grade), India and Saudi Arabia (Second Grade), and Australia and Fiji (Third Grade).
