Evening With The Arts

pic1 PBDA's Evening With The Arts was well attended by parents and friends last night, as students from 4th - 9th Grade performed on stage in the Halmos Family Activities Center and displayed their artwork in the Atrium and downstairs hallways of the main building. The live presentation included preformances by the 4th Grade, the 5th Grade Drum Groups, the Bulldog Chorus, the 6th Grade Music Class, the Middle School Chorus, the Samba Band and the combined Bulldog and Middle School Chorus. The artwork displayed included something from every student who has been in the drawing, painting, ceramics, color theory, art appreciation, and computer design and graphics classes since September. Art Department Chair, Scott Thompson, and art teachers Sue Chris, Claudie Finney, Buckley Griffis, Annette Johnson, and Tracy Kramm were proud to display the results of the students work from the first half of the year.

pic1 The Presidential Youth Fitness Program has adopted the Fitnessgram assessment. Unlike the previous program, Fitnessgram focuses primarily on health rather than meeting certain performance requirements. This allows comparisons between children to be minimized and allows them to concentrate on meeting personal fitness goals. Scores from the assessments are compared to Healthy Fitness Zone standards. This helps us to determine a student’s overall physical fitness and suggest areas for improvement when appropriate.

pic1 The Presidential Youth Fitness Program, Play60 and the NFL have all formed partnerships with Fitnessgram. The goal is to encourage at least 60 minutes of physical “play” every day to help children maintain healthy lifestyles. Fortunately for the students of PBDA, we are one of 8% of all schools in the U.S. where every student, from kindergarten through 9th grade participates in physical education classes or team sports daily.

pic1 The 2013 PBDA MATHCOUNTS team will compete in the regional competition on February 9. MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide tournament for middle school students. The regional tournament involves the top math students in the county. Students compete in a variety of challenging contests as individuals and as a team.

The MATHCOUNTS meet will run for most of the day on Saturday, as contestants compete in a variety of challenges. Each competition consists of four parts: the Sprint, Target, Team and Countdown rounds. The Sprint Round includes 30 questions to be answered in 40 minutes. The Target Round consists of 8 questions which are distributed to the students two at a time. Students have 6 minutes to complete each pair of problems. The Team Round has 10 problems for the team to work together. The top 10 individuals proceed to the Countdown Round, an oral round in which students compete head-to-head.

This year’s team – Prescott B., Jackson C., Jack F. - Co-Captain, Alexis G., Ben K., Teddy K., Briggs L., Robbie L., Kole R., & Atticus S. - Co-Captain.

Good luck team!

Palm Beach Day Academy's greater community has many connections with our school community and much to offer our families. The Palm Beach Fellowship of Christians and Jews has long supported PBDA's mission. The Fellowship is hosting a Family Fun Day Picnic for the Town of Palm Beach on February 10 and they have asked us to extend an invitation to all PBDA families.
